“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.”
Psalm 19:1-3
The stellar heavens give irresistible testimony to the power and wisdom of God (Psalm 104:24; 136:5; Proverbs 3:19). “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world” wrote the great apostle Paul, “are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). As awesome as heavens are, they are less than the very outer fringes of God’s wisdom and creative power. The heaven of heavens and all their host, in all their majestic power, beauty and mystery, were mere “finger work” for God (Psalm 8:3). Unregenerate man, particularly in the western world, refuses to acknowledge God as the infinitely brilliant architect and all-powerful Creator of the world. Instead, he insists that the world came into being through a mysterious “Big Bang” in which nothing exploded, for no reason and without a cause. We are told furthermore that stars, galaxies, planets and moons evolved in naturalistic fashion. This notion is not only antithetical to the Bible, it is badly contradicted by modern science. The Bible teaches that the heavens and earth were created by God in six days approximately 6,000 years ago. Secular scientists disagree, insisting that it took billions of years for our cosmos to evolve. Nevertheless, when we look at the cosmos we see unmistakable evidence of a youthful creation. The rate at which the moon is receding from the earth indicates that the earth-moon system cannot be billions of years old. Other similar processes include the earth’s decaying magnetic field, Jupiter and Saturn’s heat loss, and the rate at which Pluto is losing its nitrogen. The insides of spiral galaxies are supposedly spinning faster than their outer parts. After millions of years, galaxies should just be homogeneous clouds of stars. Nevertheless, galaxies everywhere still retain their distinctive shapes. The “solution” to this problem is to suggest an undetectable “dark matter” that somehow holds things together. Scientists also tell us that the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate. This was not at all predicted by the Big Bang theory. The “solution” for this is to call in yet another mysterious and undetectable entity, this time known as “dark energy.” Today secular scientists admit that over 95% of the known universe is made up of these two mysterious forces of which nothing is known! May our understanding of creation rest not upon human opinion, but upon the infallible word of the Creator Himself (Hebrews 1:3).
