“Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.”
Today’s verse passage is a reminder that though modern man may refer to himself as Homo sapiens sapiens (Man, wise, wise), he is, apart from God’s help and enablement, absolutely clueless; “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” wrote the great apostle (Romans 1:22). The evolution story is a case in point. Rejecting God as the Creator, depraved, unregenerate men choose to believe that the world somehow made itself. Against all the available observational evidence, they commit themselves to the myth that all living things are related to a common ancestor, that animal and plant kinds can, if left to themselves, evolve into fundamentally different kinds. Of course this contradicts God’s word, which states that animals are designed to bring forth “according to their kinds” (Genesis 1:11-12, 21, 24-25). Everywhere we look in the created order, the Genesis record is confirmed (Romans 1:20). Today we consider butterflies, whose attributes, capacities, life histories and behaviors absolutely defy naturalistic explanation. To begin with, all flying creatures are a powerful testimony to the wisdom, power, and creativity of God. If man-made flying machines like airplanes and helicopters need intelligent designers and makers, the much more impressive biological flying machines like birds, bats, dragonflies, and butterflies also require a (super!) intellect to account for their existence. The butterfly in particular is fascinating. This creature begins as a crawling caterpillar with a chewing mouth, simple eyes, and no true legs. It creates a chrysalis around itself in which it dissolves completely into a pulp-like liquid. According to its genetic programming, it is reassembled into a butterfly, a beautiful and capable flyer, with a sucking tube instead of a mouth, six segmented legs, and compound eyes with thousands of individual lenses. This remarkable change is like parking your car in the garage and coming back in a week to find an airplane in its place! To add to the challenge for evolutionists, it is the adult butterfly that copulates and reproduces. How did any of this evolve in steps? This amazing metamorphosis is analogous to the radical and beautiful change that takes place in every human heart that turns to Christ for salvation (2 Corinthians 5:17). One day, God will transform even our physical bodies, suddenly and supernaturally, conforming them into the likeness of Christ (Philippians 3:20-21). Body, soul, and spirit, we will be fit for citizenship in a promised new heavens and earth wherein dwells righteousness forever (2 Peter 3:13). May the butterfly serve as a reminder of these things!
